Reflexology is a natural therapy founded on the belief that your feet, face and hands are a reflection of the systems in your body - where specific areas correspond to organs, glands and structure. By applying gentle pressure to areas of the feet or hands a Reflexologist can help the body restore its own healthy balance.
Reflexology aims to treat the individual as a whole, creating a state of harmony in both body and mind. It has the benefit of being a deeply relaxing therapy, and during periods of relaxation the body takes the opportunity to heal, restore and energise itself.
Reflexology is suitable for all ages, from baby to adult, and can be especially helpful for long-term and recurring conditions. Reflexology is a complementary therapy and should therefore not be used as an alternative to conventional medicine.
Please note there are some instances when I am unable to provide a treatment. Reflexology treatments are NOT suitable when:
Duopody reflexology is a unique treatment where both feet are treated simultaneously. This differs from the traditional Ingham method of reflexology where each foot is treated separately.
At your first appointment, we will sit down together and discuss your current health, any symptoms or issues you are experiencing, what your health and wellness goals are and your current lifestyle. After consultation, we will get you comfortable on the treatment couch. I will gently cleanse your feet with hot towels before applying a reflexology balm.
I start the treatment with some relaxation techniques to help you unwind. I use pressure to stimulate reflex points on the feet, working through each of the 12 body systems. Working through the body systems in this way enables me to tailor treatments to your individual needs and focus on areas that are of most concern to you.
In addition to the Duopody treatment, a variety of other techniques can also be used including; NEPIP (a specific treatment for Stress); ART (Advanced Reflexology Techniques); CALM technique; Chakra balancing and the traditional Ingham method of reflexology. Specific Treatments are also available for fertility, maternity and post-natal clients.
The treatment usually feels incredibly relaxing, although there can be some occasional sore spots, generally it feels like a massage, but with a purpose.
At the end of the treatment, I cleanse your feet with hot towels to remove any balm residue and then share my findings with you and recommend frequency of future treatments. I may also give you some aftercare recommendations, such as specific reflex points that you can work on at home on your hands or feet or some guidance on lifestyle changes you may benefit from.
My aim is for you to leave experiencing a sense of inner calm, feeling relaxed and ready to face the world with a greater sense of wellbeing.
After your first treatment, I follow up with you by email to see how you are feeling and whether you have noticed any responses to treatment, which vary from person to person. Treatment responses can include feeling floaty and relaxed, calm and balanced, needing to use the toilet more frequently (as your body releases toxins from your system) an improvement in symptoms being experienced. It is also possible, but less common, to experience a mild headache or to feel a bit emotional, or a short term worsening of symptoms before then feeling better. Any treatment response is good as this demonstrates that your body has reacted to treatment and that reflexology is a good therapy for you.
There are several theories behind how and why reflexology works. Here are just a few:
Relaxation
Reflexology is a relaxing treatment to receive. So often we are living in our fight/flight/freeze stress response on a daily basis without even realising it. Reflexology can act as a trigger to remind your body to relax and return to your rest and digest mode. When we are in our stress response, our heart beat accelerates, our pupils dilate, our digestion is inhibited, our hormone production is inhibited, and our sweat glands are stimulated. It is very common during reflexology for clients to experience yawning, tummy rumbling, watery eyes and a general calmness as they return to their rest and digest mode, with clients often drifting in and out of sleep during treatment.
Touch
The nervous system uses both electrical and chemical energy and when we work on the feet signals are sent via the nerves to the relevant organ, body part or system. Touch therapies, such as reflexology, stimulate the release of oxytocin, which effects the nervous system and therefore the whole of the body. Oxytocin is one of our happy hormones and this being released during reflexology leads clients to feeling an increased sense of wellbeing.
Pain Gate Control Theory
This is the theory that touch (or other non-painful stimuli) lessens pain by closing the gate to painful stimuli. An every day example of this is when a child falls over and hurts themselves, we immediately hold the area that is hurt. This interrupts the pain signals to the brain and so the experience of pain is reduced. By working on the feet a reflexologist is interrupting the pain signals to the brain and this is why clients often experience reduced pain following treatments.
Sensory Nerve Endings
We are stimulating sensory nerve endings in the feet during a reflexology treatment. This then effects the central nervous system which can in turn have an impact on the whole body. There are over 7,000 nerve endings in each foot!
